Where's the boss?

"Where's the boss?" "He is working on the computer." "Oh!" or "A oui!" or a smile was usually the answer. At the beginning, when we started sorting the different materials, rubble, bricks, rusty metal bars and undefinable plastic, I didn't understand why people would ask that question. What difference does it make if my step father would have been down here, in this ruin shovelling rubble onto the hanger or not? Why weren't they more interested in what the house should look like afterwards or admiring what we, the women, did? Women in old man's jeans and dirty shirts are not very common in a beautiful, French wine-producing village. Apparently my mum and I looked like two characters from the Charles Dickens' books. The English estate agent, an inhabitant of the village, told us so. That was everything he could say. He came laughingly and left laughingly. We must have brought back some life-shaping memories. He started even worse. They had no water and no electricity and nothing else to live in other than a real and typical, genuine French ruin that had awakened romantic and adventurous images.
